14,014. The number of Prohibited Words had grown every year under the determined leadership of Collis Lafferty, Commissioner of the Civility Commission (CivCom). Lafferty was driven to expunge all offense from civilized society.
No one had the right to offend another.
A small group of cyber hacktivists, X, are the last remaining civil dissidents. When their leader Sid the Squid, the world’s most famous hacker and CivCom’s most vocal critic, is arrested, X is on the brink of unraveling.
The struggle to preserve freedom of opinion falls to X members Sylas the Stylus, Bucky Lastard, and NebuLes. Now they are in a race against the clock to stop Commissioner Lafferty before CivCom uncovers their true identities and prosecutes them under the Civility Code.
The Civility Code The Civilogy Book 1 eBook Michael W Anderson
This book is important and it is good. With timeless themes and dynamic characters, the story pulls you into a world where civility is mandated and words are limited by law. And why not? Wouldn't we all love a world where no one could be offended? Or would we? The Civility Code brings this tension between freedom and civility into sharp focus. Anderson has carefully crafted a believable and ominous world. The characters spin through it at a thrilling pace, and we can learn much from the ride.My only warning: prepare for full immersion. The dialogue, the pronouns, the technology -- they unabashedly come from a world that we have not yet seen. This, of course, is the power of fiction. In this book, it requires a willingness to embrace the lingo and style of a possible future. The reading flow can be interrupted at times, but in the end the effect is well worth it. You will see the future, and it's one we need to know in order to avoid.

The Civility Code The Civilogy Book 1 eBook Michael W Anderson Reviews
Freedom of speech. It's something we have grown accustomed to and almost taken for granted. And especially now, in a day and age where almost everything can be twisted around to offend someone.
But can you imagine a world where these words are prohibited? Everything is gender neutralized and the use of these words is a violation of a code, or against the law. This is the world that Anderson has constructed in The Civility Code..........and I think this is the "closest to actually happening" sci-fi/futuristic novel that I've read. Look where already are as a country as far as freedom of speech and then this offensive mentality that the younger generation especially is coming up with.
As with his debut novel, Anderson has once again given us a peek into what could very well be our not so distant future, and The Civility Code is an even more likely option.
As for my thoughts on the book, I loved it. I thought that it was very well-written and it definitely makes you think. It wasn't a "quick and easy" read per se, what with so much going on between the hackers, the "trial" of Sid the Squid, and then the individual stories coming together. But it was intense, and kept me hanging on until the end.
The characters were well-written as well. I really related to Kata, and that's kind of who I was rooting for (I still am, I can't wait to see what happens in book 2).
I was given an advanced reader copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Great book, thought provoking and well written.
I liked the premise of this book and the world building that went into it. The author has taken a volatile concept and made me care for his characters. My only complaint is that the ending isn't one, which caused the loss of one star. If I'd wanted a cliffhanger, I'd have bought a serial book. The author didn't finish this one, leaving you waiting for the next installment. I truly hate this and find it more and more common in books of late. I'll probably buy the next book as I truly liked the story. But if it ends like this one, it will be my last from him.
Wow! This was an extremely good book. How often do you have the pleasure of reading something totally different than your standard novels? Michael W. Anderson has done an amazing job with The Civility Code Volume 1. I did not want to put this thought provoking book down, which speaks for itself. I will not give anything away but will say that I am on the edge of my seat and cannot wait for the next book in this trilogy. He's got me hook, line and sinker.
I am an avid reader, but have never taken the time to write a review before until now. As others have said this is an enjoyable, easy read. It is a futuristic drama/thriller of sorts that builds in intensity as you move through the story, leaving you on the edge of your seat wanting the next book in the series immediately so you can read the first page. All of that aside, the reason I am giving this a high review is because it tackles a subject that is actually not that futuristic or far fetched because it is beginning here & now. As I read through the story and also kept up with the daily news headlines & social media trending topics, it was amazing how much fiction and fact merged. This book is an eye opening look at what America may look like one day if we continue with the current trends of our over zealous politically correct, continually offended, safe space culture. This is a worthwhile read for anyone if just to begin thought provoking conversation on the topic.
I find Michael Anderson's books to be disturbing. He seems to have a strong prophetic voice in warning people of where current trends are going or could go in our society. Will we listen? That is the question. I bought The Civility Code, book one, after reading Provoke Not the Children.
As a parent, I thought one scene was particularly chilling--that of a three-year-old reciting a song she had learned in her preschool about informing on her parents if they used prohibited words. It sure reminded me of what happened in the Cultural Revolution in China under Chairman Mao when gangs of politically-correct young Red Guards terrorized their neighborhoods and turned in their own families to the authorities. Could that happen here? Yes, if we keep trampling on free speech in our country.
Another thought-provoking part of the book for me was Lafferty carefully selling the IRIS 2.0 futuristic eyeware/ spyware to the unsuspecting public through a TV talk show. Spyware is here now; how far will we let it go? I really got into the characters and did not want this book to end.
