Every piece of baggage carries the tales of the lives it has touched.

Aaliyah Johnson just wants to live a normal life – finish school, have a career, a family, a future. But when her father takes his own life after his return from the war in Afghanistan, she and her mother are plunged into poverty and a homeless struggle to survive.

The unusual circumstances of her mother’s acquisition of a small, green suitcase seem to mark a turnaround in their luck as they begin to rebuild their lives. Then, in a heartbeat, a devastating blow rocks her world, and young Aaliyah’s baggage may be more than she can bear.

Review

The author tells a very powerful story filled with themes of racial and ethnic injustice and discrimination, class differences, the importance of relationships, and the impact of trauma on teens and families. I found myself looking forward to reading more from the very start. - OnlineBookClub.org official review

The Daughters' Baggage eBook Diane Winger

I'm trying to remember the beginning of the story. If sort of got lost. I guess we learned of the significance of the green suit case. It seems as though Kayla had a bit of underdevelopment in character. I kept feeling there was more.

The pain that Ladonna and aliyah had to endure was heart breaking. Being brutally raped and forced to carry the child to term and almost losing her very own life. But God bless her for allowing her to live.
I wondered if Mariah may have been a bit traumatized by finding out who her bio dad was.
Awesome ending. One adoptee to another

The Daughters' Baggage eBook Diane Winger Reviews

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It didnt take the usual path of how rape devastates the victim instead focused on the daughter of the rape. How adoption effects their life-- good parenting education etc. Easy flow. Enjoyed it. I recommend it to my friends
It exceeded my expectations for its likeness to 'serious literature'! Not expecting such an engrossing, thought- producing tale I was surprised, happily so, to find it to be a sensitive, rather than the more often seen maudlin, treatment of some of the important issues faced by a victim of rape.

The terrifying experience of rape by a near stranger has the power to affect not only the victim. It often impacts her family and can even reach forward into the next generation if the act results in the creation of a new life.

Rape resulting in an unwanted pregnancy forces decisions to be made either by or for the victim in a timely manner. The first and most obvious choice is to abort vs. carry to full term.

If the decision is to have the baby for reasons ideosyncratic to the mother's situation or her religion, or simply allowing the pregnancy to continue past the window of time when abortion is feasable, decisons will have to be made concerning the fate of this new life.

Should the child be relinquished to an adoptive family at birth in the hope of giving it a better life than can be provided by the, often very young, more often than not impoverished, birth mother? Is the birth mother emotionally capable of letting go of an infant which has already been a part of her life for nine months? These are difficult decisions which will affect the child and its mother throughout each of their lives.

All of these issues and more are faced by the characters in A DAUGHTER'S BAGGAGE by Diane Winger.

Good read.
First time out of the gate with this author and she did not disappoint! This was a very interesting and liberating book filled with various ethnicities, travelling each their own road separately yet together, all sharing the same "baggage!" This was a great story of strength, endurance, forgiveness and love...Mrs. Winger, well done!
I recommend A Daughters' Baggage for the following reasons
Well- developed plot with lots of twists and turns and unpredictable, well- crafted surprises
Likeable, believable characters and a villain that creates the major conflict (a celebrity who rapes a young girl)
A topical, universal theme that is both heart-breaking and beautiful
A totally satisfying ending
The Daughters' Baggage is not a bad read, but a bit on the preachy side. I'm not sure if there is a name for this specific genre, but it definitely belongs in the category of 'horrible things happen in life, but the characters survive it, lessons are learned, and a pensive, hopeful tone is kept, so everything turns out more or less alright in the end.'
In an attempt to touch upon innumerable societal ills, the story sometimes gets overwhelmed. Part way through the book, I realized just how many social justice topics were being brought up and revisited, again and again and again. The story almost became a vehicle to air social injustices. While I often agreed with the things being said, I did get rather tired of the repetition.
This book was a page turner. I don't know where to start. It addressed so many issues that we are facing in the world even now! I loved how the characters were developed, it wasn't rushed. Even though there were a few storylines going on in the book they all just worked well together.I teared up several times while reading the story, was so glad it had a good ending. You will enjoy this book.
This was a most engrossing story and I read it in "one fell swoop". The author's use of two pieces of luggage to reveal family stories was most clever and captivating. I have often wondered about all the "ordinary" things around us and the stories they could tell. Tying generations together and addressing some of the very persistent issues of the day, I do believe this story appeals to all readers. Great work, Diane. Can't wait to read more.
